As the busiest transportation hub for passengers in the entire country, there's a good chance that if you're in Toronto for a little while, at a conference as a cosmetic dentist, Toronto resident, or as a tourist, than you will pass through Union Station at some point. This centre sees more than a quarter of a million people go through every single day. This site was opened to the public in 1927 and is hard to miss on Front Street right in the entertainment district.

The Prince of Wales was the one that hosted the opening of the station and was presented with the first ticket sold, which went all the way to Alberta and cost $71.20. The construction of the building started in 1914 and it took seven years to complete the structure. This gives it the same level of character that you will see in many buildings throughout the city that have survived nearly a hundred years, from those used as homes to currency exchange. Toronto brought in Montreal architects as well as a local company to make the Beaux-Arts design.

While it might look like nothing much has changed over the years when looking at the outside of Union Station, there is a lot going on inside. If you're a Toronto event caterer or a mother trying to get your kids to school in the morning there are hundreds of trains going through that will get you where you need to go. There is a revitalization project currently in the works for the building that is going to cost over $300 million and is a project between the national and provincial governments.

There are tracks for the Toronto Transit Commission's subway line, the GO Train, Via Rail, Amtrak, and Ontario Northland. There are also connections to Greyhound Canada, Coach Canada, and Megabus. If you need to get from Toronto townhouses to anywhere else on Canada than you could start out at Union Station. But this is more than just a place where you can get where you're going. It was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1975 and this is something worth seeing as a landmark in the city even if you're not traveling.

One of the best things about Union Station is that it still sits right in the middle of what many people would consider the centre of the city. It's right in a neighborhood where you will find a trendy loft, Toronto theatre, or great restaurant. And this means that it's something anyone staying in a Toronto hotel is likely to see on their visit and can be used by Toronto residents on a daily basis.
